Women's Institute
The WI movement was started in Ontario by Adelaide Hoodless, a farmer's wife.
When one of her babies died she believed that this tragedy was the result of her own ignorance of hygiene and childcare, and she resolved to make the education of women her life's work. The first British WI was started in 1915 and the Rotherfield Branch was formed in March 1919. At that time there were 109 members and their annual subscription was 2/-.
The WI is a three-tier organisation, National Executive, County Federation and Local Branch. There are currently two Institutes in Rotherfield. The original one called simply Rotherfield and another one, which was formed in 1965 for the benefit of working women, held in the evening and aptly named Rotherfield Evening.
The organisation is based on the ideals of fellowship, truth, tolerance and justice.
We are non-sectarian and non-party political. Our members continue to provide help and support for village events and local charities.
Our popular Art Shows are held every other year and we provide an opportunity for local artists to display and sell their work.
Membership
We have 47 members in the Rotherfield WI. Our subscription is £17.25.
We meet on the first Wednesday in every month in the Village Hall at 2.30pm.and provide a variety of activities such as: education from our classes and interesting speakers, play reading, scrabble and a variety of outings throughout the year.
Our next function is a coffee morning in the Memorial Institute on July 6th at 10 am. to raise funds for our charity of the year, which is the League of Friends of the Rotherfield and Brook Surgeries
