In the centre of Mayfield’s beautiful High Street is the Middle House, an oak-beamed Tudor house hotel/pub with a fine restaurant, an atmospheric bar usually crowded with locals, and breathtaking views from its tiered garden.

Wadhurst is another attractive village worth a visit. The church has an imposing Norman tower which dominates the landscape and the High Street contains rows of attractive houses and shops of many architectural styles and character.

For some serious retail therapy and the widest choice of restaurants, it’s off to Royal Tunbridge Wells (www.visittunbridgewells.com), with its stunning Regency period houses and the famous Pantiles walking street.

In Georgian times it was the spa retreat much favoured by the royals and their courtiers who, during regular visits to the town, alternated between partying in style and seeking the therapeutic recovery powers of the natural spring waters.

Just 6 miles from Rotherfield, it has everything you could want, with a touch of class thrown in. It is one of only two ‘royal’ towns in the country.
